My class (5th grade, I think) was returning from a field trip to Springfield, IL. I think we took Amtrak to Springfield and buses back, for some reason.

In the blue polo shirt is Jon Steffen, who had a pet rat named Simpleton. I assumed it was a play on Templeton--the rat in "Charlotte's Web"--but Jon hadn't read the book. He saw one character in the comic strip "B.C." call another "simpleton," and he liked the sound of it. Years later, I tried to convince a friend to name her new rat Simpleton, but she wasn't havin' it.

Main reason I posted this pic, though, is the SHERATON sign in the background. It loomed over I-70 for years, between my grade school (now a credit union) and my subdivision. I don't think the letters EVER all worked at once. The hotel was replaced by a new, non-Sheraton hotel, and the sign was carted away in pieces.
