The seating used to be entirely outdoors, but now it is protected from the elements by this beautifully-designed shell. DBerry2006 posted a photo:
This was my first visit back to Ashland in 40 years. The Shakespeare Festival grounds have changed a lot since then. "Back in my day" we walked through gates in the ivy-covered walls to enter the outdoor theater directly. Now it is semi-indoor-outdoor and there is a "new" indoor theater next door, the Angus L. Bowmer Theater. Angus L Bowmer was the founder of the Ashland Shakespeare Festival, and I remember him coming out to greet us in person one time. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angus_L._Bowmer DBerry2006 posted a photo:
The last time I was here (about 1967) it was called the Mark Antony and it didn't have that elevator tower up the north side. I remember staying here with my grandparents when they took me to Ashland to for the Shakespeare Festival in the mid-60's. I recall sitting with my Grandpa in the lobby after the evening's Shakespearian performance while he enjoyed his cigar and a bit of late-night football on the lobby TV. DBerry2006 posted a photo:

Lithia Park in Ashland was a wonderland to me on our frequent visits there when I was little. After 40+ years since my last visit I was happy to see that very little has changed. You can see the back of the Shakespeare Festival outdoor stage in the background. |
