that most remarkable teacher
arrived at Athens to lecture.
He found the city empty.
Herodis was in the country -
all the young people had followed him
into the sticks.
Alexander from Seleukeia

begged him to post some pupils off to town.
Herodis replied: 'I'm coming back
and all the boys are coming with me.'
How many students now in Alexandria
or learning to speak good Greek in Antioch
or beating out hexameters in Beirut -
how many gathering to daintily dine
lounging around the table on their elbows
discussing the finer points of sophistry
discoursing of their amatory adventures -
how many fall suddenly silent, are struck dumb
forgetting the pleasant viands and fine wines
while they cogitate on Herodis' large fortune
(the lustrously spangling gold, the sparkling gems)
the wonder and the wealth of that great Attikos -
who does whatever he likes wherever he goes
and all the Greeks
(who would ever think it of the Greeks?)
follow him follow him, follow at his whim
ask nothing, argue nothing
neither criticise nor debate

34. LOVER OF THE GREEKS (PHILHELLENE)
Sithaspis, I adjure you to ensure
the engraving for my coinage is your best.
Show me with a serious expression.
Some majesty would not here be amiss,
a lifting and enhancement of the profile.
Trace my tiara delicately thin
unlike those great thick wedges of pure gold
loved by the barbarians -- so vulgar!
The inscription on the coin will be in Greek
since that's a must. Nothing exaggerated
and no bragging: the Governor wouldn't like it.
(He's always poking his nose in, telling tales
back at Rome.) Give me my due nonetheless;
be properly respectful.
On the reverse: a beautiful young athlete
preparing to throw the discus; like that
lovely marble statue by what's-his-name.
Above all else Sithaspis, most dear artist,
don't let them neglect, after the honorific
'Saviour' and 'King', to add to my titles
'Lover of the Greeks'. I must have 'Philhellene'
despite your critical banter. Disbelief
and bitchiness won't stop me. And don't say,
as you usually tease me, 'Greeks? what Greeks?
Greeks out here beyond the back of beyond?'
Since all the petty heads of petty tribes
use that sounding inscription, so shall we.
And anyway you always seem to forget
the philosophers who visit us from Syria,
the peripatetic poets down on their luck
and similar artistic ne'er-do-wells.
With all this, we can hardly be un-Greek!

27. ENDINGS
Shivering with apprehension,
mind a minefield, foreboding on our faces
we feverishly grab at any half-plausible plan
to plot our way from an expected imminent explosion.
We're wrong. The anticipated blow
is not the one that threatens.
All our scheming's wasted.
The actual disaster, the fate we never thought of,
crashes down upon us
violent and sudden,
finds us totally unprepared,
sweeps us off our feet.
Ttrembling with apprehension,
alarm-bells tripping in feverish minds
glances full of foreboding
we clutch at every half-baked plan
to lead us from this labyrinth of terror.
28. IN IONIA
Although we smashed their statues
and drove them from their pillared temples,
the gods still live.
They yet inhabit their ancient Ionian land
guarding the amorous memory in ageless souls.
August dawn upon the coast of Asia Minor.
Their ardours shimmering through the pearly atmosphere.
See there! A winged, a graceful flying form
indistinct, indefinite, passing quickly
across the purple-glowing rounded hills.
29. THE SCULPTOR FROM TYANA
Form is everything: shape, weight, outline, curve.
From my apprentice boyhood until now
I've chiselled an enormous bulk of stone.
In Tyana, where i come from, I'm well known.
My skills are much admired here as well.
This is my Rhea, in the primitive style.
There's Pompey, Marius and Aemilius
along with Scipio Africanus.
I make them as like as i can.
What do you think of my Patroklos?
I have yet to give him some finishing touches,
carving his nipples, polishing his buttocks:
feel here; at the moment they're so rough.
The exquisite Kaisarion, next to that unhewn marble-
see how he rests his weight upon one leg.
I've spent a lot of time on this Poseidon,
especially his horses. I want to
make it seem as if they're airborne,
galloping above the moving waves.
But here's my favourite: look at him, he's lovely,
sculpted with pious but amorous hands.
One clear summer day I had a vision
of the beautiful youthful Hermes:
here he stands.
30. DODGY IMPULSES
Myrtias from Syria

when the emperors Konstans and Konstantios
reigned; Myrtias, only in part a christian,
said: 'My mind strengthened
by study and meditation
I shall not fear the body and its passions;
nor like a timorous man refrain
from the full range of sensuous pleasure.
I will enjoin my flesh to ascertain
the limits of erotic satisfaction;
or if there be no boundary, to pass,
with all lascivious ardour of my blood,
the pulsing threshold of enamoured lust.
'These hot temptations shall I fully taste,
relishing the pleasure and the pain,
made strong by rigorous study, energised
by deepest contemplation. I'll be able,
when I will and if I wish, to recommence
the life of ascetic fortitude, as before.'

all the notorious pleasures of the world,

Barbarian or Greek,

21. THAT'S HIM!
Come from Edessa to Antioch,
in the new city unknown,
he continues his composition.
At last it is done.
Eighty-three minted poems in all!
Such labour! Such intensity!
The weary lyrist is wrung,
his talent worn,
his head too full of words.
And it all seems so worthless,
all that effort wasted.
Then a sudden thought lightens his mood.
He imagines them saying
'There goes the man, that's him, the poet.'
- Like words to those the scribbler Lucian heard
as he lay dreaming.
22. KING DEMETRIOS
Abandoned by the Macedonians
who favoured his rival Pyrros,
noble Demetrios
didn't react like a king.
He simply slid out of his golden robes,
kicked off the royal purple shoes.
Dressed as a commoner, he left at once
like an actor when the play is done
changing out of his costume,
slipping away down the street.
23. THE OLD TOWN
You said: 'I'll emigrate,
find somewhere better than this.
Whatever i do turns sour.
I feel as if entombed.
I'll not stay here and rot away.
Here, my life is ruined,
my years run uselessly into the sand.'
You will not find another country
nor sail an unknown sea.
This town will dog you everywhere;
to whichever place you journey
our faded streets will follow.
You will age in these same districts,
turn grey in similar houses.
In your wanderings you will always end up here.
You spoiled your life in this crumbling town:
so it will be wherever you go.
24. THE PROVINCE (SATRAPY)
How awful, that you,
so noble, so accomplished,
never get a chance to prove yourself
in a fulfilling manner.
Vulgar people stand in your way,
the mean and the indifferent.
It will be a sorry day
when you disregard your higher principles
and set out for Susa
and the court of Artaxerxes, the Great King.
Of course, he will take you in,
offer you the governance of some province -
all that sort of thing.
So demeaning! Not at all what you deserve.
Despairing, you will feel you have to accede.
Your intellect was formed for better things:
the acclamations of the people,
the praise of the philosophers,
the senate, the public stage,
crowned with crowns of laurel.
- You won't get these from Artaxerxes
or from governing some huge province.
Without them, how you will droop
in an unfit setting.
25. IDES OF MARCH
I mustn't get above myself.
If I cannot curb ambition
I'll be extra vigilant
the higher I ascend
the greasy pole.
And when I get to the top -
leader of the Roman state -
assuming that persona,
I shall be very careful
going out in public
surrounded by my retinue.
Should Artemidoros,
who cautioned Julius Caesar,
or somebody like him
thrust a letter into my hand, saying
(as he said to him)
'Read this at once and heed my warning'
- I will scrutinise his paper in minute detail
disregarding people pressing to see me,
disregarding even vital business.
I will ignore the sycophants;
the senate itself will have to wait
- all those noble and learned gentlemen -
While I carefully study Artemidoros's words.
26. THE GOD ABANDONS ANTONY
At the ghostly midnight hour
you sense an unseen procession,
a mystic train sweeping onwards
past you.
Accompanied by melodious voices
you hear a thrilling music:
the sound of waves on a deserted beach
drenched in bright white moonlight;
the whisper of star to star
along galactic highways.
At last your luck's run out.
All you made and did is turned to water
trickling away through illusory hands
held out in supplication. Do not despair.
You're ready. You have courage.
Whisper 'farewell' to Alexandria. She is passing.
Don't choose the prosaic option. Do not say
the music was a dream, that you imagined voices.
- That would just be silly.
You are ready. You have your courage.
You were worthy of this great city.
Step to the window. Go out upon the balcony.
Listen, with responding deep emotion
which sets aside all carping, any whining,
to that precious fading melody,
to the voices of the unseen company;
and say goodbye; farewell to Alexandria
who is leaving.
The photographs are of Cavafy's flat in Rue Lepsius, taken while the poet was alive and in residence. They come from the first edition of 'Cavafy a critical biography' published by Gerald Duckworth & Co Ltd in 1974. (It has recently been reprinted as a paperback but without the wonderfully evocative photographs.)
The music accompanying 'The God Abandons Antony' is from 'The Pines of Rome' by Respighi, the second movement 'Pines Near A Catacomb'.

St. Catherine of Alexandria
VIRGIN, MARTYR
Feast: November 25
From the tenth century onwards veneration for St. Catherine of Alexandria has been widespread in the Church of the East, and from the time of the Crusades this saint has been popular in the West, where many churches have been dedicated to her and her feast day kept with great solemnity, sometimes as a holy-day of obligation. She is listed as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers of mankind among the saints in Heaven; she is the patroness of young women, philosophers, preachers, theologians, wheelwrights, millers, and other workingmen. She was said to have appeared with Our Lady to St. Dominic and to Blessed Reginald of Orleans; the Dominicans adopted her as their special protectress. Hers was one of the heavenly voices heard by St. Joan of Arc.
Artists have painted her with her chief emblem, the wheel, on which by tradition she was tortured; other emblems are a lamb and a sword. Her name continues to be cherished today by the young unmarried women of Paris.
Yet in spite of this veneration, we have few facts that can be relied on concerning Catherine's life. Eusebius, "father of Church history," writing around the year 320, had heard of a noble young Christian woman of Alexandria whom the Emperor ordered to come to his palace, presumably to become his mistress, and who, on refusing, was punished by banishment and the confiscation of her estates. The story of St. Catherine may have sprung from some brief record such as this, which Christians writing at a later date expanded. The last persecutions of Christians, though short, were severe, and those living in the peace which followed seem to have had a tendency to embellish the traditions of their martyrs that they might not be forgotten.
