Corey Hodges aka Lil Corey was the definition of child prodigy. Born in Atlanta, GA eighteen years ago, music has always been the focal point of Corey's life. Besides trying to mimic the R&B songs his mother played around her house, Young Corey was fascinated with the piano and by age five, taught himself to play by ear. "My grandmother had a piano in her sitting room and id watch her play, trying to get the timing right. I didn't recognize the songs she would play but there was this feeling I got when I would listen to her play," Corey explains.
It wasn't long before Corey's extended family and friends learned of his vocal and musical talent. After performing in a 5th grade talent show, Corey realized performing was his destiny.
"I will never forget that day. I sung Whitney Houston's 'Greatest Love of All', there were teachers, my friends, even girls I didn't know standing up screaming for me. I was hooked from that day on." After the first taste of stardom, Corey sung every chance he got. One day while singing in the West End Mall, he met a woman that would change his life. "This lady introduced me to two guys who took me around to several studios. The next thing I knew I had a deal with Motown records," Corey says.
At the age of twelve it appeared Lil Corey's destiny was written in the stars. His debut single "Hush Little Lady" received rave reviews and charted some of the biggest radio spins in 2002. The album credits for "I'm Just Corey" (Motown) read like a who's who in the music industry elite with Johntae Austin, Akon, JQ, Brian Michael Cox, Teddy Bishop, Diane Killings, Jazze Pha and even Michael Jackson collaborating with the young R&B crooner. Barely a teen at the time, Lil Corey felt like he was on top of the world.
Unfortunately the predictions were pre-mature and a situation between Corey's management and Motown went sour, ending Corey's relationship with the label. Heartbroken Corey returned home to Atlanta and tried to pick up the pieces of his career. He served the ties with his management but contractual obligations would prohibit him from signing with another management company until he was eighteen years old.
Determined to be an even bigger success the second time around, Corey diligently worked in his vocals and songwriting. His talent and determination to succeed despite his situation impressed Ryna Adams, producer and CEO of Stack'Em Entertainment, an independent Label, based in Atlanta. Adams signed Corey to a production deal and began teaching him to work the equipment in the studio. "He's a rare talent. He can do it all. He sings, produces and writes his own material. We wanted to see him back at the top where he should be", Adams says of Stack'Em's flagship artist.
Today, Corey is five years older and anxious to let his fans hear what he's been working on for the last few years. He's also looking forward to introducing his music to an entirely new fan base. Slated for a release in fall 2008, Corey's sophomore album features a mix of soul-stirring ballads, smooth, mid-tempo tracks and a few hip-hop laced tracks to keep the club jumping; but remains true to his R&B roots. Corey will admit that one of his biggest goals is to get back on stage and reclaim the feeling he gets from sharing his gifts with others. "I know what it takes to get to the top and that's why I have so much respect for those out there doing it now. I've been putting in the work and I can't wait to get out there and let people hear what we've been working on," he says smiling. Besides penning material for his own album, Corey has been busy writing for other R&B and Hip Hop acts as well.
At eighteen years of age, the child prodigy is all grown up. His velvet smooth vocals are familiar yet they've been cultivated and nurtured. His prospective has broadened from recess and afterschool rhymes to being in love and experiencing some hard life lessons. But what has remained consistent is Corey's dedication to his craft and his love affair with music. He believes his early experience in the business prepped him to be an even bigger success the second time around. "I don't regret anything." Corey reveals "Everything Ive gone through has helped make me the person I am today. Along time ago, my mother told me my voice was a gift from God. I truly understand that now, and I know that making music is what God put me here to do"
