LOS ANGELES, California -- The stars trekked to an invite-only Star Trek preview Wednesday on the Paramount Pictures studio lot.
During the 45-minute session, director J.J. Abrams introduced four clips from his 2009 prequel to the classic sci-fi series and talked about his motivations for making the movie.
Sitting cheek-to-jowl with roughly 400 civilian nerds were bespectacled actor Zachary Quinto (who plays Spock, pictured right), Chris Pine (James T. Kirk), John Cho (Sulu), Bruce Greenwood (Captain Pike), Ben Cross (Sarek) and bearded Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, who plays the hero's father, George Kirk.
But the starring role during the afternoon teaser session was played by director/ringmaster/comedian Abrams, who took center stage in rumpled blue jeans and untucked shirt to unveil the excerpts from Paramount's highly anticipated 2009 tent-pole space odyssey.
"I didn't jump at directing this movie like a true Trekkie -- I was obsessed with Twilight Zone," Abrams told the crowd of fanboys, media types and studio employees. "But then I got the script from Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, which was adventure and funny and romantic and sexy and epic yet intimate -- everything you'd want."
Setting up the first clip, which featured Kirk as an Iowa malcontent, Abrams explained: "Part of the goal here was to legitimize this idea of space travel. Star Wars, which I love, takes place 'a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.' But Star Trek is us. We needed it to feel earthbound as well."
Before screening a dramatic scene that takes place aboard the slickly upgraded U.S.S. Enterprise, Abrams also talked about the human drama he previously said would drive his Trek prequel.
"Some of my favorite stuff in the film takes place between Spock and Kirk," Abrams said. "They don't get along. Spock's first order of business is to get Kirk the fuck off the ship."
After the screening, Wired.com caught up with Quinto, who also plays Sylar on TV's Heroes. Was he nervous about slipping his head into the pointy-eared persona made famous by Leonard Nimoy?
"I wouldn't actually say that I felt intimidated by Spock partly because I felt so supported by J.J. Abrams," Quinto said. "I also got to know Leonard Nimoy, who was really gracious."
Tapping into the hyperlogical Spock mentality was simply a matter of trusting the story laid out on the page, he said: "That really came from the writers, Bob and Alex, and then going with J.J.'s vision 110 percent."
Across the lobby, actor/musician Greenwood swapped shop talk with Pine, who plays guitar in his off-screen spare time. Describing his take on the part of Captain Pike, Greenwood said: "I'm reprising Jeffrey Hunter's role, so I looked at what he'd done. Someone told me his son was trying to get a hold of me. I don't know if he had any concerns -- but I never heard from him."
Summing up the best and the worst parts of his Star Trek adventure, Greenwood zeroed in on the Starfleet uniforms.
"Let me tell you, those suits are uncomfortable," he said, "but getting to have all that authority is nice."
