Brockton police were forced to put down an injured deer that had wandered into an elementary school yard as the children arrived at school. The deer had been shot by a hunter in Abington and hunters had tracked it for a couple of miles before it ended up in Brockton.
Shotgun deer hunting season began this week in Massachusetts.

Sitting among the thousands of people who watched the annual Holiday Parade downtown Saturday, Tim Reardon of Brockton says hes caught the vision of the city as Christmas town.
The 35-year-old lifelong city resident and father of three said he believes rebirth could come to the struggling downtown if it continues to promote its ties to Christmas history.
Many believe that James Edgar, a downtown Brockton business owner in the late 19th century, was the worlds first department store Santa, and the city has sought to draw new attention to the story this season.
I think its awesome. I was here last Saturday for the Santa hat thing, Reardon said, referring to an event in which hundreds of people wore Santa hats to pay tribute to Edgar. Nostalgias always nice.
The Edgar tribute and holiday parade are just the latest events in what downtown business association president John Merian hopes is a move toward making Brockton Christmas town.

On this Thanksgiving, Cathy Bernard is most grateful for the chance to help the two wagging tails under her table.
That would be Jack, a black pit bull lab mix, and Heidi, a 3-year-old hound mix — dogs that Bernard rescued in her quest to help womans best friend.
When it comes to counting her blessings, Bernard, a former animal control officer in Brockton, puts caring for and rescuing canines at the top of the list.
Its so rewarding and fulfilling to see these animals come off the street and into a new home, said Bernard, 28, a married mother of one. I cant describe it. Its awesome.
Her dogs probably think Bernard is awesome, too.
With their tails wagging, the dogs sat in her kitchen recently and looked up at Bernard obediently as she gave them a treat.

BROCKTON — Charlene Ainslees eyes filled with tears as she accepted a Thanksgiving turkey from a Catholic Charities volunteer Monday.
Its a big relief, said Ainslee, 52, who was seeking help for the first time after a disability left her unemployed.
Behind her, hundreds of turkeys awaited others in need, including Vera Rodriguez of Brockton, who said her family of four may not have had Thanksgiving dinner without help from Catholic Charities.
Its tough to get by on one income, said Rodriguez, whose husband is out of work. The couple has two children, ages 12 and 4.
She and the others had preregistered for the 900 holiday dinner packages — turkey, potatoes, canned vegetables, stuffing and gravy — that volunteers handed out at Catholic Charities on Monday.
It is the largest Thanksgiving program in the city, according to Dennis Carman, president and CEO of the United Way of Greater Plymouth County. Churches, schools and other agencies supplement the program with additional meals for those in need.
Mondays annual giveaway came as many people are struggling to make ends meet and hang onto their jobs in a sour economy.
Unemployment nationally is just over 6 percent. The financial markets are sputtering. The housing market is struggling to overcome a surge in foreclosures. The auto industry is in a crisis.
But families still want to get together on Thursday to reflect on what they are grateful for — and to enjoy a traditional dinner with all the fixings.
Theres something magical about turkey and Thanksgiving, said Robert Loxley, who coordinates the effort at Catholic Charities.
