1882, Antiguo Oeste de Nuevo Mexico, Appaloosa, ciudad al margen de la ley. Alguien deberá encargarse de reconducir el destino de esta comunidad minera dominada por el implacable Randall (Jeremy Irons) y sus desalmados secuaces, encargados de matar a sangre fría al policía federal de la villa. Y quién si no para tal enmienda pues el sheriff Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) y su socio Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen). Reestablecer el orden en Appaloosa podría ser una sencilla tarea para ambos, curtidos agentes de la paz en las más adversas comunidades, de no ser por la llegada a la ciudad de la insinuante Allison French (Renée Zellweger), una viuda que desestabilizará las raíces amistosas entre los dos agentes. Muy mal se tiene que dar la realización de este western, pues contando en sus filas con estos cuatro jeques de la interpretación, véase Mortensen-Irons-Harris-Zellweger, se hace difícil el fallo. Veamos si la vuelta a los ruedos de Ed Harris como director sigue teniendo interés, tras su pasado debut en el 2000 cuando narró la vida del artista contemporáneo Jackson Pollock, por la que obtuvo grandes críticas.
