Kirkwood makes a stand in close win
WENTZVILLE — Kirkwood's goal-line defense earned the game ball during Wednesday's Class 5 regional football game at Holt.
The defense held Holt to two field goals after the Indians had first down and goal to go, then kept Holt off the board altogether in a crucial fourth-quarter stop to preserve a 14-13 win for the Pioneers. Kirkwood (6-4) advanced to sectionals against Hazelwood East at Ritenour on Monday.
"They came up big," Kirkwood coach Larry Frost said. "I'm really proud of that. It is something we haven't done all season and they really rose to the occasion."
Holt (7-4) went on a 17-play drive lasting 6:21 in the fourth quarter. Holt had a first and goal from the Kirkwood 6 but could only get it to the 2 before the drive stalled. Holt sent in Sean Lanham for the go-ahead 20-yard field goal attempt, but Lanham's kick was blocked by a group of Pioneers. Kirkwood was able to run out the clock.
"That's defense, that's what defenses do," said Darryon White, who collected a sack and made several stops during the goal line stands. "That was team defense and all of us staying together."
Holt took a 7-0 lead on a Nick Grubbs 10-yard run with 1:58 left in the first quarter. The score came one play after an improbable fourth down conversion as Collin Pierce's pass went off of Ricky Bailey's hands and right to Blayne Mesplay, who caught it at the 10 for a 21-yard gain.
Holt drove the ball to the Kirkwood 2- and 5-yard line on consecutive drives in the second, only to be kept out of the end zone by Kirkwood's defense. Holt had to settle for a pair of 22-yard field goals by Lanham to make it 13-0 at halftime.
Kirkwood struck quickly in the third quarter on two touchdown passes by Allen Eberhart. Robert Cannon got the Pioneers on the board with a 43-yard catch, and Eberhart's 24-yard pass to Ahmad Hicks put Kirkwood ahead.
"We were clicking together and working as a team," Eberhart said. "We weren't playing as individuals like we were in the first half."
