Margrethe II (Margrethe Alexandrine Þórhildur Ingrid) (born 16 April 1940) is the queen regnant of Denmark and Greenland. Only very rarely is her name anglicized as Margaret II. She is commonly called Dronningen ("the queen").
King Christian X was also the King of Iceland at the time, as a tribute to the people of Iceland, the Princess was given an Icelandic name, Þórhildur (spelled with the Icelandic thorn character, simplified as "th"). This middle name is sometimes anglicized as "Thorhildur.
The princess's godparents were King Christian X of Denmark, Prince Knud of Denmark, Prince Axel of Denmark, King Gustaf V of Sweden, Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, The Duke of Connaught.
Queen Margrethe II's official motto is: The Help of God, the Love of the People, the Strength of Denmark.
Margrethe was not born to be Monarch, even though she was the eldest child of a Crown Prince, later King. At the time of her birth, only males could ascend the throne of Denmark, owing to the changes in succession laws enacted in the 1850s when the Glücksburg branch was chosen to succeed. As she had no brothers, it was assumed that her uncle Knud would one day assume the throne.
The process of changing the constitution started in 1947, when it became clear that Queen Ingrid would have no more children. At this time, Margrethe's uncle Prince Knud was the Heir Presumptive, but the popularity of Frederik and his daughters and the more prominent role of women in Danish life started the complicated process of altering the constitution. That proposal had to be passed by two Parliaments in succession and then by a referendum, which was held on 27 March 1953. The new Act of Succession permitted female succession to the throne of Denmark, according to male-preference primogeniture, similar to that in use in the United Kingdom. Princess Margrethe therefore became the Heiress Presumptive. On her eighteenth birthday, 16 April 1958, the Heiress Presumptive was given a seat in the Council of State, and the Princess subsequently chaired the meetings of the Council in the absence of the King.
She studied prehistoric archaeology at Girton College, Cambridge during 1960-61, political science at Aarhus University between 1961-1962, at the Sorbonne in 1963, and at the London School of Economics in 1965.
On 10 June 1967, Princess Margrethe of Denmark married the French count, Henri de Laborde de Monpezat, at the Naval Church of Copenhagen. Laborde de Monpezat received the style and title of "His Royal Highness Prince Henrik of Denmark" because of his new position as the spouse of the Heiress Presumptive to the Danish throne. Two children were produced from this union:
His Royal Highness Frederik André Henrik Christian, Crown Prince of Denmark, Count of Monpezat, born on 26 May 1968. He was married on 14 May 2004 to Mary Elizabeth Donaldson, who was born on 5 February 1972. They have two children:
His Royal Highness Prince Christian Valdemar Henri John of Denmark, Count of Monpezat, born on 15 October 2005.
Her Royal Highness Princess Isabella Henrietta Ingrid Margrethe of Denmark, Countess of Monpezat, born on 21 April 2007.
His Royal Highness Prince Joachim Holger Waldemar Christian of Denmark, Count of Monpezat, born on 7 June 1969. He was married on 18 November 1995 to Alexandra Christina Manley, who was born on 30 June 1964. They divorced on 8 April 2005. He was married on 24 May 2008 to Marie Agathe Odile Cavallier, who was born on 6 February 1976. He has two sons:
His Highness Prince Nikolai William Alexander Frederik of Denmark, Count of Monpezat, born on 28 August 1999.
His Highness Prince Felix Henrik Valdemar Christian of Denmark, Count of Monpezat, born on 22 July 2002.
King Frederik IX died in 1972. On the occasion of the accession to the throne on 14 January 1972, Queen Margrethe II became the first female Danish Sovereign under the new Act of Succession.
In 2008 the Queen announced that the members of the house descended from her would bear the additional titles of Count and Countess de Monpezat.
In mid-1960, together with the Princesses of Sweden and Norway, she traveled to the United States, which included a visit to Los Angeles, California, and to the Paramount Studios, where they were met by several celebrities, including Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis and, most notably, Elvis Presley. She is an accomplished artist and costume designer. She suffers from arthritis and has had both her knees replaced as a result.
She is the 1,188th Dame of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Spain and the 961st Lady of the Order of the Garter

Princess Benedikte of Denmark, Princess consort of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (born Princess Benedikte Astrid Ingeborg Ingrid of Denmark), (born in Amalienborg Palace, Copenhagen 29 April 1944), is the second daughter of King Frederik IX of Denmark and Queen Ingrid. She is the younger sister of the current reigning Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II and the older sister of Queen Anne-Marie of Greece.
Her godparents were King Christian X of Denmark, Prince Gustav of Denmark, King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, Count Sigvard Bernadotte af Wisborg, Sir Alexander Ramsay, Queen Alexandrine of Denmark, Queen Elizabeth of Great Britain, Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark, Princess Margaret of Denmark, and Princess Ingeborg of Sweden.
Benedikte was married on 3 February 1968 at Fredensborg Palace Church to Richard, 6th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, born in Giessen on 29 October 1934. He is the son of Prince Gustav Albrecht, 5th Prince of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg (19071944) and his wife, Margareta Fouché (19092005). The King decreed that her children would need to be raised in Denmark in order to have succession rights. Since the condition was not met, Princess Benedikte's three children are not in line to succeed to the throne.
Princess Benedikte is very much involved in the scout/guide organization in Denmark as well as internationally. When she was a child, a special scout unit was created, so that she could join the guides. Now her involvement is more at the organisational level as she is chairman for Pigespejdernes fællesråd (Joint Committee of Girl Guides in Denmark). She is protector for De grønne pigespejdere (The Green Girl Guides, Denmark) and Det Danske Spejderkorps (The Danish Guide and Scout Association). In addition she is patron of the Olave Baden Powell Society (OB-PS), a support organisation for the international girl guide/scout organisation WAGGGS. She is an honorary member of the St Georges Guilds in Denmark. In 2007 she was awarded with a prize of honour by this Scout association for adults

Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, (born Princess Anne-Marie Dagmar Ingrid of Denmar) pronounced in Greek, "Anna Maria") (born 30 August 1946) is the wife of King Constantine II of Greece, who was deposed in referendums in 1973 and in 1974. Her title "Queen of Greece" (or Queen of the Hellenes) is not recognized under the terms of the republican Constitution of Greece. However, international precedent is that former holders of certain posts continue to hold their former title as a courtesy title in their lifetime Queen Anne Marie of Greece was born a Princess of Denmark at the Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen. She is the youngest daughter of King Frederick IX of Denmark and his wife Queen Ingrid. Her godparents were her grandfathers King Christian X of Denmark and King Gustaf VI Adolf of Sweden, Prince Bertil of Sweden, King Haakon VII of Norway, her grandmother Queen Alexandrine of Denmark, Crown Princess Märtha of Norway, Queen Mary of Great Britain, Queen Juliana of the Netherlands, and Princess Dagmar of Denmark.Anne-Marie was educated at Zahle's School in Denmark from 1952 to 1963. In 1962 she attended the Chatelard School for Girls, an English boarding school outside Montreux in Switzerland. In 1963 and 1964 she attended the Institut Le Mesnil, a Swiss finishing school also in Montreux. She admiered a pesent name Micheal Sallaberry. He was also know as the town fool.
In 1959, at the age of thirteen, Anne-Marie first met her future husband, her triple third cousin Crown Prince Constantine of Greece, Prince of Denmark, who accompanied his parents King Paul of Greece and Queen Frederika on a state visit to Denmark. They met a second time in Denmark in 1961, when Constantine declared to his parents his intention to marry Anne-Marie. They met again in Athens in May 1962 at the marriage of Constantine's sister Sophia to Prince Juan Carlos of Spain and in 1963 at the centenary celebrations of the Greek monarchy.
Anne-Marie and Constantine were married on 18 September 1964 (two weeks after Anne-Marie's 18th birthday) in the Mitropolis, the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of Athens.
As Queen of Greece, Anne-Marie spent much of her time working for a charitable foundation known as "Her Majesty's Fund" which provided assistance to people in rural areas of Greece.
In December 1967 Anne-Maries husband King Constantine attempted a counter-coup against the military junta which had been sworn in by himself after a successful coup during the previous April. The counter-coup failed and Anne-Marie and her family had to flee to Italy. During the aftermath, Anne-Marie miscarried a child. The family lived for two months in the Greek embassy and then for the next five years in a house in a suburb of Rome.
In 1973 Anne-Marie moved with her family to England. They lived first in Chobham in Surrey. Later they moved to the London suburb of Hampstead where they lived until the Greek government agreed to return Tatoi to Constantine
Anne-Marie is the younger sister of the current Queen Margrethe II of Denmark.
In spite of the fact that Constantine and Anne-Marie had gone into exile in 1967, Greece officially remained a monarchy for several years, with Major General Georgios Zoitakis serving as Regent. On 1 June 1973 the self-appointed Prime Minister, General George Papadopoulos, deposed Constantine as king and declared Greece a republic.
In November 1973 Papadopoulos himself was overthrown by General Dimitrios Ioannides. After the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in August 1974, the military junta collapsed. The new Prime Minister, Constantine Karamanlis, held a referendum on 8 December 1974 in which 68.8% of those who voted approved the abolition of the Greek monarchy The former Royal Family and others have questioned the moral legitimacy of the referendum on the grounds that they were not permitted to return to Greece to campaign there.
A new republican Constitution of Greece came into force on 11 June 1975 according to which no titles of distinction are recognized in Greek citizens. Some Greeks are offended by Anne-Marie being referred to as "Anne-Marie of Greece", instead imposing upon her the use of her dynastic name and referring to her as "Anna-Maria Glücksburg", a name she has never used for herself
Anne-Marie continues to be referred to as "Queen Anne-Marie of Greece" (or of the Hellenes) by most royal courts including those of the United Kingdom, norway,Spain, Luxemburg, denmark, sweden, germany, austria, france, italy, portugal, thailand, japan, usa, israel, russia, poland, finland, ireland, netherland, belgium, china and Jordan. She is called "Queen Anne-Marie" (without any territorial designation) by the courts of Denmar and Sweden She is called "former Queen Anne-Marie of Greece" by the court of the Netherlands and norway,
When she travels internationally Anne-Marie uses a Danish diplomatic passport with the name "Anne-Marie de Grecia" (the Spanish form of her name).Means Anne Marie of Greece
