Alexander Koester (German Painter 1864 - 1932) In accordance with his parents' wishes Alexander Koester became a trainee apothecary in Wintzheim near Colmar in 1882. After finishing his apprenticeship he enrolled at the Karlsruhe academy in order to study under Carl Hoff and Claus Meyer. In 1889 the artist travelled extensively and particularly while walking the Inn and Oetz valley, produced many sketches, the basis for a series of genre paintings. Already as a student, Koester earned his livelihood with portrait commissions. During this time he travelled for the first time to Klausen in Southern Tyrol where he would later settle. But for the time being he returned to Karlsruhe where - apart from portraiture - he dedicated himself increasingly to genre painting and contributed to numerous exhibitions. After finishing his studies, Koester moved to Klausen where the new working conditions led him to great productivity.
He did numerous paintings directly from nature. In the process, he discovered a subject which - in its great variety - would preoccupy him for another thirty years: the duck. This subject quickly became very popular. Koester rented a studio in Munich in order to have easier access to the upper Bavarian landscapes where he painted in summer. In ever increasing painterly virtuosity he produced reflecting surfaces and duck's feathers shimmering in shadow and light, reminiscent of late-impressionism. Success did not fail to materialise: In 1904 Koester was awarded the gold medal at the world fair in St Louis for his painting 'Enten'. He was awarded another gold medal by prince regent Luitpold of Bavaria for the painting 'Dem Ufer zu'. As of 1908, the artist became a regular visitor of the area around Lake Constance in order to capture great, wide expanses of water in every weather. During the war Koester temporarily lived in Dießen am Ammersee and eventually settled there. With great enthusiasm he now dedicated himself to flower still lives, though the subject of the duck always remained highly visible in his works until the end. Alexander Koester died on 21 December 1932 in Munich. Today, the pictures of ducks embedded in landscapes still account for his reputation as 'Enten-Koester'.

Alvino Rey's 'Talking Steel Guitar' could actually talk, giving Rey's orchestra its distinctive sound (some of Rey's critics called it a 'gimmick'). Rey played with virtuosic skill, demonstrating his guitar's 'singing' quality by manipulating the tone and volume controls. 'Stringy' (the guitar's nickname) was able to sound as if 'HE' were saying words. Of course 'Stringy' wasn't, but Luise King, Rey's wife was. In something that describes like a sexual fetish, Luise stood backstage with a small plastic tube connected between her mouth and Rey's amplifier, forming words with her lips and throat muscles. Rey would make her make 'IT' say his name as he glided the steel bar along the strings of his steel guitar, all while playing, perfectly dressed in a perfect tuxedo.
With the device, Rey and Luise were able to create eerie vocal sounds in four- or five-part harmony, which seemed to mysteriously emanate from the steel guitar.
**INVENTION**
Alvin McBurney (ALVINO REY) was born in 1908, and grew up in Cleveland. His first instrument was a banjo, which he tinkered with, attaching electrical wiring to amplify its twang through a radio loudspeaker. In the Spring of 1935 Rey was hired by the Gibson Guitar Corporation to produce a prototype pickup with engineers at the Lyon & Healy company in Chicago, based on the one he had developed for his own banjo. The result was incorporated into Gibson's first electric guitar.
*SKEETS HERFURT*
Arthur 'Skeets' Herfurt, (clarinetist) moved to California to work with Alvino Rey in the early 1940s. Following his stint with Rey, he worked as a studio musician in Hollywood, in addition to work with Benny Goodman in 1946-47. His studio credits into the '60s, include: Louis Armstrong, Jack Teagarden, and Stan Kenton. He worked with Goodman again in 1961 and 1964. Herfurt appeared in two of Rey's films, 'JAVA JIVE' and 'CIELITO LINDO,'he also appeared as a saxophonist in the 1958 film 'The Nightmare,'playing clarinet on the soundtrack. He was a member of Lawrence Welk's orchestra and weekly television show from 1979 to 1982.

INTERVIEWER: How did your "Talking Guitar" come about?
PETE DRAKE: Well, everybody wanted this style of mine, but I sort of got tired of it. I'd say, "Hey, let me try and come up with something new," and they'd say, "I want you to do what you did on So-and-so's record." Now, I'd been trying to make something for people who couldn't talk, who'd lost their voice. I had some neighbors who were deaf and dumb, and I thought it would be nice if they could talk. So I saw this old Kay Kayser movie, and Alvino Rey was playing the 'talking guitar'--I thought, "Man, if he can make a guitar talk, surely I can make people talk." So I worked on it for about five years, and it was so simple that I went all around it, you know, like we usually do.
Alvino Rey died in Salt Lake City.
He was 95.

Le château de Menthon-Saint-Bernard, classé monument historique, est une forteresse médiévale située, sur un rocher de 200 m de haut, à une dizaine de kilomètres au sud d'Annecy en Haute-Savoie dans un cadre sublime. Il domine de ses tours de pierre le lac d'Annecy, la réserve protégée du Roc de Chère et la commune de Menthon-Saint-Bernard. En arrière plan se dressent les dents de Lanfon. Il a inspiré Walt Disney dans son film "le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant" (1959).La première forteresse a été érigée au IXe siècle (vers l'an 923) ; c'était à l'origine un simple poste de garde en bois, installé sur ce promontoire qui domine l'ancienne voie romaine et le lac d'Annecy, mais les bâtiments actuels ont été construits du XIIIe au XIXe siècle.
Au XIe siècle, en l'an 1008, serait né dans cette première forteresse médiévale, Bernard de Menthon qui fonda l'hospice du Grand-Saint-Bernard, il est le patron des montagnards (alpinistes et skieurs) et fonda les abbayes de haute montagne.
À partir de l'an 1180, il fut occupé par la famille de Menthon qui l'habite toujours (plus de 800 ans de présence). L'origine de la nouvelle famille de Menthon est incertaine mais elle serait issue de la Bourgogne, et à partir du XIIIe siècle, elle va acquérir une certaine puissance féodale. Dès son installation, elle fait construire les trois grandes tours carrées.
Au XVe siècle, Nicod de Menthon, fut ambassadeur en France du duc Amédée de Savoie, puis Gouverneur de Nice et amiral de la flotte qui sera envoyée par le concile de Bâle à Constantinople.
À la Renaissance la forteresse médiévale est transformée en somptueuse résidence, siège de la baronnie de Menthon. Des appartements prennent la place des chemins de ronde, et la famille de Menthon va acheter beaucoup de meubles.
Au XVIIIe siècle, un ensemble de pièces spacieuses et lumineuses sont ajoutées sur la façade donnant sur le lac, comportant la salle à manger et le grand salon de 100 m² permettant d'admirer le lac de ses 4 fenêtres.
Au XIXe siècle, entre 1860 et 1890, le château fut remanié (consolidation, élévation des murs, ajout des tourelles, création de la galerie à colombages de la cour intérieure), par le comte René de Menthon qui était un fervent disciple de Viollet-le-Duc.
François de Menthon, le père de l'actuel comte, fut un juriste, grand résistant, qui représenta la France lors des procès de Nuremberg. Il œuvra pour la création de l'Europe et fut ministre de la Justice sous De Gaulle.
Le château compte 105 pièces sur 4 niveaux et s'étend sur plusieurs centaines de m². On peut admirer dans le château de très belles pièces meublées, avec en particulier la chambre de la comtesse, les anciennes cuisines XIIIe siècle, et la grande salle, admirablement décorée de tableaux et de beaucoup de meubles anciens datant du XVIe au XIXe siècle, de quelques meubles Louis XIII et Louis XIV, d'une belle tapisserie des Gobelins de 1730 et d'autres d'Aubusson.
Il contient aussi une fabuleuse bibliothèque de plus 12 000 ouvrages d'avant 1800 comprenant des incunables (premiers livres imprimés) et des manuscrits anciens écrits sur parchemin, peau de mouton ou de chèvre, avec des enluminures peintes par les moines du Moyen Âge. Mais la plupart des ces livres datent des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siècle. La bibliothèque comprend aussi une des rares édition complète de l'encyclopédie de Diderot.
Le château se visite de mai à septembre, et la visite est agrémentée en été par une troupe de comédiens qui fait revivre le passé du château. Chaque année il accueille près de 40 000 visiteurs.
Il est possible d'y louer des salles pour des réceptions, séminaires et mariages (150 personnes).
En 2008, pour le millénaire supposé de la naissance de Bernard de Menthon, des manifestations commémoratives seront organisées.

Évian est surtout connu pour son eau minérale, exploitée par la Société anonyme des eaux minérales d'Évian, filiale du groupe Danone.Située sur le trajet de pèlerinages en direction de l'abbaye de Saint-Maurice d'Agaune, Évian fut tout d'abord une halte, notamment grâce à son port. Elle fut une des cités de l'ancien duché de Savoie et de la province du Chablais. Elle fut notamment une des résidences des ducs de Savoie. La ville va se développer entre le XIe et le XIVe siècle avant de rentrer en sommeil et de connaître un nouvel âge d'or aux XIXe et XXe siècles, grâce au développement du thermalisme.
Les quelques sources qui font surface à Évian sont encore très peu connues à l'époque de la Révolution française. Analysée en 1807 et en 1808, l'eau d'Évian démontre des qualités pour le traitement des voies urinaires. L'accès à Évian est facilité par la création de son port, puis le passage de la Route nationale 5 qui relie Paris à Milan (1809). Un Genevois, M. Fauconnet, fonde la Société des Eaux Minérales d'Évian en 1823. Il acquiert les deux sources dont la plus connue, la source dénommée Cachat, du nom de la famille qui les cède, le 16 mars 1827. La société de M. Fauconnet, après avoir fait faillite, est reprise et l'on construit l'Hôtel des Bains. Viennent s'ajouter plusieurs autres établissements, l'Hôtel des quatre saisons, l'Hôtel de France, l'Hôtel des Alpes, etc. Le cadre offert par la proximité du lac permet diverses attractions (promenades en canots, balades, etc.) Le Palais Lumière, anciens thermes de la ville d'Évian. Restauré, il a été ré-ouvert en 2006, ayant retrouvé son dôme de métal et de verre. Il accueille aujourd'hui un centre culturel et de congrès.
- La source Cachat, symbole de l'Art nouveau, il abrite le hall d'information des eaux minérales Évian.
- La "Villa Lumière", ancienne propriété de la famille Lumière (cf. Auguste et Louis Lumière), devenue la mairie de la ville. Évian est placée au premier rang des villes fleuries détenant quatre fleurs au classement national.

Évian-les-Bains or Évian is a commune of France, in the northern part of the Haute-Savoie département, on the shores of Lake Geneva (aka Lac Léman), opposite Lausanne, Switzerland. In July 1938, the Évian Conference was convened there to discuss the problem of Jewish refugees. On March 18, 1962, the Évian Accords were signed there. On June 1, 2003 the G8 began its 29th summit meeting in Évian.The town is home of Evian mineral water, which makes up the foundation of the economy together with the Casino d'Evian, largest themed casino in Europe,[citation needed] and the Evian Royal Resort, favorite holiday destination of former French President François Mitterand.
The two largest hotels in Évian are the Hotel Royal where the G8 summit was held and the Hilton.

The Afiara String Quartet perform the second movement of Mendelssohn's Op. 44 quartet.
The all-Canadian Afiara String Quartet is the Morrison Fellowship Quartet-in-Residence at San Francisco State University's International Center for the Arts, where they serve as teaching assistants to their mentors, the world-renowned Alexander String Quartet. Winner of the 2008 Concert Artists Guild International Competition in New York and awarded 2nd Prize at the prestigious Munich ARD International Music Competition, the San Francisco Classical Voice calls the Afiara Quartet "a terrifically unified, versatile, and moving ensemble" with "startling intensity" and a "powerful, keen-edged collective sound". They have performed at Carnegie Hall in the "Kronos: Signature Works" series, were presented in their New York debut by Chamber Music America and the Kronos Quartet at St. Luke's Church, and taught as faculty ensemble at Chamber Music of the Rockies and Canada's Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute. They have been heard on Bavarian Radio, CBC Radio 2, KALW, and were featured in the "Road to Banff" documentary.
This season, the Afiaras will play concerts with Chamber Music in Occidental, Old First Church Concerts, San Jose Chamber Music Society, and Sierra Chamber Society, and in Canada with the Calgary ProMusica Series and the Montreal International Chamber Music Festival. The quartet will also appear with the Alexander String Quartet in a performance of Mendelssohn's Octet with San Francisco Performances at Herbst Theatre, with pianist Stephen Prutsman in San Jose and Nevada City's Music in the Mountains, and with Bonnie Hampton in a performance of Schubert's Cello Quintet with the Starcross Festival. Under the auspices of the ICA, the Afiara Quartet will also be recording its debut CD with the Foghorn Classics label, which will include quartets by Mendelssohn and Schubert, as well as the Mendelssohn Octet with the Alexander String Quartet, to be released in the spring of 2009.
Formed in 2006, the Afiara Quartet was invited to compete as one of the ten semi-finalists in the 2007 Banff International String Quartet Competition. In 2008, they were one of the two quartets-in-residence of Aspen Music Festival's Advanced Quartet Studies Program, are Artists-in-Residence at Lake Tahoe Music Festival's Education and Outreach Program, and Affiliates of San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music.
To date, the quartet has given the world premiere of Brett Abigana's Une Grande Messe in San Francisco, the East Coast premiere of Peteris Vasks' String Quartet in New York, and Jason Bush's string quartet Visions, which is dedicated to and written for the Afiara String Quartet, received its world premiere in San Francisco. In collaboration with timpanist Louis Siu, they commissioned and premiered new chamber music repertoire for string quartet and the tenor timpani, resulting in many new works for the medium. The Afiaras also gave the world premiere of Huck Hodge's String Quartet No. 2 in New York with the support of the American Composers Forum and the Jerome Foundation.
The Afiara String Quartet takes its name from the Spanish fiar, meaning "to trust". It has been said that chamber music is a conversation between friends. Within the support of friendship, the Afiaras found that trusting each other, in rehearsal and on stage, was vital to the depth and joy of their music-making. The Afiara Quartet is committed to education, sharing their music with those less fortunate, and connecting to audiences on different levels. They combine urban elements to their outreach and make new connections in their presentations by coupling together Haydn and hip-hop, complete with a rapping cellist, often to the glee of students and enthusiastic amusement of adults. They collaborate and perform with the rap group Blunt Delphix.
Along with their studies with the Alexander String Quartet, the Afiaras are fortunate to have worked with the American, Cavani, Emerson, Kronos, Takacs, and Ying String Quartets, Earl Carlyss, James Dunham, Henk Guittart, Bonnie Hampton, Geoff Nuttall, Barry Shiffman and Scott St. John, and at the San Francisco Conservatory with Paul Hersh, Mark Sokol, and Ian Swensen.
