Torrington, Connecticut is the largest city in northwestern Connecticut. Nestled in the foothills of the Berkshire Range, Torrington offers breathtaking scenery and a bounty of cultural and historical attractions. First settled in 1735, Torrington was incorporated in 1740 and began life as a rural agricultural community. By the early 19th century, several enterprising townsfolk had harnessed the fast moving waters of the Naugatuck River for use in powering mills, and industrial growth skyrocketed after the construction of a woolen mill by Frederick Wolcott in 1813.
Israel Coe and Erastus Hodges began the construction of two brass mills on the Naugatuck River in 1834. Torrington quickly became a center for the brass industry, which would later spread throughout the entire Naugatuck Valley. In 1849, the Naugatuck Valley Railroad was completed, connecting Torrington with other population centers and stimulating further industrial growth. Soon, Torrington was producing a variety of metal products including needles, brass, hardware, bicycles, and tacks.
Torrington's growing industrial plants attracted English, Irish, and German immigrants throughout the 19th and early 20th century. Between 1880 and 1920, Torrington's population exploded from 3,000 to 22,000 as immigration from southern and eastern Europe increased. During this period, immigrants included the Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Italians and Lebanese. Torrington was charted as a city in 1923.
Today, Torrington seeks to preserve its heritage with revitalization efforts in the downtown area, which includes the Downtown Torrington Historic District. The east end of the city along U.S. Route 202 has seen rapid commercial growth in recent years, and Torrington has emerged as an arts center for the region with the restoration of the Warner Theater and the renowned Nutmeg Conservatory. A thriving small city with a rich history and a healthy industrial base, Torrington offers a blend of contemporary sophistication and old-fashioned New England charm.
