  Kitty Hawk is a town in Dare County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,991 at the 2000 census. It was established in the early 1700s as Chickahawk. Kitty Hawk was made famous on December 17, 1903, when the Wright brothers made the first controlled, powered airplane flights six kilometres (4 miles) away near the sand dunes known as the Kill Devil Hills.
